I recently made the decision to return to South Africa and I made it based on my observations about the opportunities available to me in the heritage sector here in the States, and my immediate chances of accessing those opportunities. It seems to me that to be taken seriously as an expert in African arts and cultural heritage, I should be working in Africa.
I have therefore decided to return to South Africa. I am in the process of applying for a number of vacancies in the arts and culture sector. I hope something works out before my imposed departure date of november 2. wish me luck everyone. I know America is seen as the land of opportunity and dreams but the reality is they are also experiencing the current world wide recession. I look forward to coming home to where I belong and where my heart is.....on the continent.

I would still try to find work in USA. Usually its easier to look and find work at the place where you are. Perhaps you also need to look into other sectors?
Hi Thomas,
Thank you for your comment. I really thought about looking for something in the environmental sector for example but the truth is that my expertise and training is in arts, culture and heritage management.
That's really what I want to do and I have passed the stage in my life where I want to play tic-tac toe until something sticks. I know one has to start from somewhere when you make a shift in career but not ground zero hopefully. I want to find a fine balance without loosing sight of what I really want to be doing.
